Hire an RV for the Calgary Stampede: The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth

Calgary Stampede RV hire is the smartest way to experience the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. The Calgary Stampede runs for 10 days every July across Stampede Park in the heart of Calgary – and with hotels booking out months in advance and prices soaring during Stampede week, an RV puts you minutes from the rodeo, the chuckwagon races, and the nightly Grandstand Show in a city where accommodation is the biggest logistical challenge of the trip.

Event Overview

The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo, exhibition, and festival held every July in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The ten-day event, which bills itself as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”, attracts over one million visitors per year and features one of the world’s largest rodeos, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing, and First Nations exhibitions.

The inaugural Calgary Stampede took place from September 2 to 7, 1912, drawing over 110,000 paid attendees – more than double the city’s population of approximately 45,000 at the time. The event’s roots are traced to 1886 when the Calgary and District Agricultural Society held its first fair. In 1912, American promoter Guy Weadick organized the first rodeo and festival, known as the Stampede. He returned to Calgary in 1919 to organize the Victory Stampede in honour of soldiers returning from World War I, and the event became annual in 1923.

Weadick famously encouraged all Calgarians to dress up in Western garb and decorate their businesses as “wild west” saloons. Streets were closed to vehicular traffic for morning parades and cowboy parties, creating a city-wide carnival atmosphere for the full duration of the event. Most notably, Weadick conceived and staged the first chuckwagon races – a dynamic, chaotic and immensely popular contest that would quickly rival the rodeo in spectacle and excitement.

The Calgary Stampede’s all-time attendance record was set in 2024, with 1,477,953 people visiting the event. Today the Stampede is as much a music festival as it is a rodeo, with major international artists performing across multiple stages throughout the 10 days.

Why Calgary Stampede RV Hire Is the Best Way to Experience the Stampede

Tickets and hotels are already sold out on some dates months before the event. An RV is the smartest way to secure your accommodation, control your schedule, and turn the Stampede into a full Alberta road trip. Here is why it is the best way to experience it.

  • All local RV parks have shuttle services to and from the Stampede, making it a great option when planning your trip.

  • Your own kitchen means no queuing at food vendors for every meal – save that for the famous Stampede midway foods

  • A private, comfortable space to rest between the afternoon rodeo and the evening Grandstand Show

  • Cowboy hats, boots, and Western gear take up space – an RV gives you the storage a hotel room doesn’t

  • Turn the Stampede into the centrepiece of an Alberta road trip through the Canadian Rockies before or after

  • Avoid the astronomical hotel price surges during Stampede week across the city

  • Travel with a group and split costs – far more economical than booking multiple hotel rooms

  • Combine your accommodation and transportation, giving you the freedom to stay close to the Stampede grounds while avoiding hotel price surges, and turn your visit into an epic road trip through Alberta’s stunning landscapes.

Where to Camp at the Calgary Stampede With an RV

Stampede Park itself does not offer on-site RV camping for general visitors, but a number of well-positioned campgrounds across the city operate Stampede shuttle services directly to the grounds.

Mountainview Camping – located approximately 3 km east of Calgary – offers sites with water and power hookups from 15-amp to 50-amp, as well as pull-through sites for easy manoeuvring of larger units. The campground offers a daily shuttle service into the city during the Calgary Stampede.

Calaway Park Campground – located west of the city – offers mountain views and a daily shuttle available during the Calgary Stampede for those looking to check out the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

Bonnybrook District Campgrounds – some sites in Calgary’s Bonnybrook district offer 30-amp and water hookups just 4 km from the Calgary Stampede, 5.7 km to downtown, and 90 metres to a bus stop and light rail access.

Recommended RV Features for the Calgary Stampede

The best time to rent an RV in Calgary is between June through the middle of September, when high temperatures average between 18 to 24 degrees Celsius. The warm days and chilly nights are perfect for sleeping with your RV windows open at night. July during Stampede can also bring afternoon thunderstorms, so come prepared for variable weather.

  • Air conditioning or good ventilation – July days in Calgary can push into the high 20s°C

  • Heating – evenings cool down quickly in Alberta; an RV with good insulation and heating keeps you comfortable after late nights at the Grandstand Show

  • Onboard kitchen and fridge – stock up before arriving to avoid the daily expense of Stampede food prices for every meal

  • Onboard toilet and shower – saves time and money at busy campground facilities during peak Stampede week

  • Adequate storage – Western attire, boots, and hats for 10 days require more luggage space than a typical trip

  • Awning or shade canopy – great for setting up a campsite tailgate between days at the grounds

  • Good sound insulation – campgrounds near Calgary are busy and social during Stampede week

What to Pack in Your RV for the Calgary Stampede

  • Cowboy boots, hat, and Western wear – dress codes are enthusiastically embraced; the whole city goes Western for 10 days

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses, and a hat – July in Alberta means long days of full sun

  • Rain jacket and waterproof boots – afternoon thunderstorms are common in Calgary in July

  • Comfortable walking shoes – Stampede Park is large and you will cover a lot of ground across multiple days

  • Camp chairs, folding table, and an awning – set up a proper tailgate at your RV site

  • Portable gas or charcoal grill – most campgrounds permit grilling at your site

  • Large cooler or a stocked RV fridge – cold drinks after a hot day at the rodeo are non-negotiable

  • Portable phone charger – long days away from the RV drain batteries fast

  • Cash – Stampede Park has ATMs but they queue badly and can run out

  • Earplugs – campgrounds during Stampede week are lively and social well into the night

  • Binoculars – excellent for getting close-up views from grandstand seating

General tips for camping at Stampede time:

  • Book your RV site well in advance – campgrounds near Calgary fill up for Stampede week just as fast as hotels

  • Most campgrounds run dedicated Stampede shuttle buses, removing any need to drive or park at Stampede Park

  • Calgary has narrow streets and laws prohibiting long-term parking of oversized vehicles. Although some attractions have larger parking lots, when visiting the city your best bet is to leave your RV at the campground and make use of the light rail or bus system.

  • The CTrain (Calgary’s light rail system) runs directly to Stampede Park and is an easy alternative to shuttle services
