Scotland Without the Airfare - Camp Right at the Games

The Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games runs for three days every August in the beautiful town of Fergus, Ontario – bagpipes at dawn, caber tossing on the field, Highland dancing competitions, Celtic music in the pub, and a Heritage Village of over 50 clans. The Festival has enjoyed tremendous success since its inception by Alex Robertson in 1946, beginning as a one-day event in Victoria Park, and in 1991 evolving into an annual three-day event that celebrates local Scottish heritage and features world-renowned talent and entertainment. An RV on the festival grounds puts your whole clan steps from the action – a private home base right inside the Sportsplex grounds, with no commute, no hotel bookings, and no missing the Friday night Tattoo’d in Tradition ceremony because you drove in from Guelph.

Event Overview

The Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games has enjoyed tremendous success since its inception by Alex Robertson in 1946. The Festival began as a one-day event in Victoria Park. It quickly grew in popularity and attendance, leading to the addition of a second day, and in 1991 evolved into an annual three-day event that celebrates local Scottish heritage and features world-renowned talent and entertainment in the beautiful town of Fergus, Ontario. The Festival has had two locations over its history, Victoria Park and more recently, the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Festival exemplifies all things Scottish with a focus on the pillars of any Highland Games including Heavy Events, Highland Dancing, Pipes & Drums, and Clans & Heritage. The Highland Games originated with the Ancient Celts, thriving and evolving in the competitive environment of the clan structure of Scotland.

Festival Location

The Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games takes place at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex on the western edge of Fergus, Ontario – a historic river town of around 20,000 people situated on the banks of the Grand River, about 100 kilometres northwest of Toronto and 20 minutes north of Guelph.

Fergus is one of the most authentically Scottish communities in North America. Founded in 1833 by Scottish settlers Adam Fergusson and James Webster, the town’s heritage is visible in its solid limestone buildings, its Scottish street names, and a curling club established in 1834 that is still active today. The downtown core along St. Andrew Street runs alongside the Grand River, with independent pubs, restaurants, and shops housed in stone buildings that have been standing since the mid-1800s. Templin Gardens, a beautifully landscaped riverside park built from local limestone, sits in the gorge wall above the river and is one of the most photographed spots in the region.

The Sportsplex itself is a large community hub with twin arena floors, a community hall, and an aquatic centre. During the Festival, the surrounding grounds host the Heavy Events field, pipe band competition areas, a Heritage Village of over 50 clans, vendor rows, and an on-site campground with 256 sites. Everything – competitions, entertainment, pub, and camping – is within the same festival footprint. The neighbouring village of Elora, just five kilometres north, adds to the appeal of the area with its dramatic limestone gorge and heritage architecture along the Grand River.

Fergus is easily reached from all major Ontario cities, with Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) approximately 70 minutes away by car.

Why Hire an RV for the Fergus Scottish Festival?

Camping on the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games site, close to all the activities and events, ensures that you don’t miss a thing all weekend long. Fergus is a small town β€” hotel accommodation in Centre Wellington is extremely limited and books out entirely for the Festival weekend. Guelph and Kitchener are 30–45 minutes away. An RV on-site is the obvious choice.

  • Camp directly on the Sportsplex grounds β€” walk to every event, every competition, every pub session without a car, a shuttle, or a parking scramble
  • Wake up to the sound of pipe bands warming up on Saturday and Sunday morning β€” the quintessential Fergus Highland Games experience
  • Friday’s Tattoo’d in Tradition ceremony starts at 5pm β€” on-site campers are already in position; day-trippers are still in traffic
  • A fully stocked RV fridge and kitchen saves significantly across three days of festival food and drink pricing
  • Your own private bathroom avoids the festival’s portable toilet queues during busy event periods
  • The McKiddie’s Centre runs all weekend β€” families with children benefit enormously from a nearby RV base camp for naps, feeding, and costume changes
  • Pack the full Scottish wardrobe β€” kilts, tartans, sporrans, and clan regalia take up significant suitcase space; an RV has room for the full clan’s regalia
  • Up to 6 people per campsite makes an on-site RV significantly cheaper per person than booking multiple hotel rooms in Guelph or Kitchener
  • Riverside Rentals in Drayton, ON β€” just 25 minutes north of Fergus β€” offers delivery and setup at Highland Pines Campground, Fergus and other local festival and special event locations Best Calgary Homes

What Happens at the Fergus Scottish Festival

The Festival exemplifies all things Scottish with a focus on the pillars of any Highland Games: Heavy Events, Highland Dancing, Pipes & Drums, and Clans & Heritage. JamBase

  • Heavy Events β€” The Highland Games’ most spectacular competition. Watch world-class athletes hurl cabers, toss sheaves, throw hammers, and put stones in the Heavy Events Championships. Fergus holds the distinction of achieving a Guinness World Record for the most people caber tossing simultaneously.
  • Pipe Band Competitions β€” Pipe Band Competitions draw pipers and bands from across North America and beyond, filling the Sportsplex grounds with the sound of great highland bagpipes from morning through to the evening events.Β
  • Highland Dancing β€” Competitive Highland dancing brings dancers of all ages to the field, with categories running throughout Saturday and Sunday for local, provincial, and national competitors.
  • Clans & Heritage Village β€” Over 40 clans, a Heritage Tent, research tools and lectures in the Genealogy Centre make this one of the most comprehensive Scottish heritage experiences in North America. Whether your surname is MacDonald or Murphy, the Heritage Village is a fascinating window into Scottish culture and genealogy.Β
  • Tattoo’d in Tradition β€” The spectacular Friday evening opening ceremony featuring massed pipe bands, Highland dancers, and a theatrical celebration of Scottish tradition. Included with your Friday admission ticket.
  • The Highland Pub β€” A beloved fixture of the Festival, the Highland Pub is where Celtic musicians perform all weekend in an atmospheric indoor setting. The 2026 Featured Guest, Signal Hill, will be performing in the Highland Pub throughout the festival.
  • Whisky Tastings β€” Whisky Tasting sessions are available as separate ticketed events throughout the weekend β€” a highlight for Scotch enthusiasts. JamBase
  • McKiddie’s Centre β€” A dedicated children’s activity area running crafts, games, and Scottish-themed programming all weekend, making the Festival ideal for families.

Suggested Trip Timeline

Camping on the Festival site is available from Thursday through Monday. Your campsite pass and your general admission festival ticket are separate purchases β€” both are required to access the Festival grounds.

Site Sizes

Most sites are 20 feet x 40 feet. Sites located in the “Shaded Camping Area” will vary in size. Sites designated as “Oversized” are 20 feet x 50 feet. Camping unit size is measured from front hitch (or front bumper for RVs) to rear bumper β€” not living space. Camping units that exceed size restrictions may not be admitted to the grounds. Measure your RV, including all deployed slides, before purchasing your site tier.

Serviced vs Unserviced Sites

Electrical hookup is provided for sites marked “Service” (see map and legend) β€” all campers are to provide their own electrical cord. This cord must be a minimum rated 12/2 with ground. Smaller cords with different ratings may result in fire, power surges, or damage to electrical systems. Limited water hookup is provided for service RV/Camper spots, though water hookup for each individual site is not guaranteed. Unserviced sites are available for RVs with generators or solar setups.

One Vehicle Per Site

Every campsite will receive one campsite parking pass, which allows parking for one steering wheel β€” for example: one RV, truck bed camper, etc. OR one passenger vehicle plus one towed unit (tent trailer, pop-up trailer, travel trailer, or 5th wheel trailer). Overflow weekend parking for one additional vehicle is available for $25 β€” must be purchased at the time of campsite reservation.

Capacity and Shelter

Max two pieces of shelter equipment plus one dining shelter on your campsite, where space allows. No more than 6 people per campsite unless the people comprise a single family of parents and their children. The Festival does not supply picnic tables for campsites.

Arrival Times

To ensure the safety of our volunteer organizers and to avoid disruption of final site setup, campers are not permitted to enter the CW Sportsplex parking lot or Festival Grounds any earlier than 12 noon Thursday without written permission from a Festival Board Member. Earlier arrivals will be asked to leave the grounds and may be subject to ejection. There will be no exceptions regardless of affiliation with the Festival or a camper’s participation in the Festival events.

No Generators (Serviced Sites)

No power generators of any kind are permitted on standard serviced sites due to noise β€” generators affect the competition judges’ ability to hear events. Generators are only permitted on Oversized sites, and even there use is restricted to specific hours. If you rely on a generator, book an Oversized site and confirm generator hours when purchasing.

Black and Grey Water

Black and grey water dumping stations are NOT available on Festival grounds. The closest campground with dumping facilities is Highland Pines Campground, approximately 25 minutes from Fergus β€” call ahead to ensure availability. Plan your tank capacity accordingly for the full festival weekend.

Pets

Pets are permitted on campsites only. Festival patrons are asked to exercise the caution required to prevent possible injury to their pets and to other persons. Pets may not be brought into the Festival grounds proper.

Cleanliness and Waste

All campers must leave their campsite clean and free of garbage. Garbage receptacles are available on site. Do not leave broken or damaged camping equipment. All campers must remove propane cylinders from the grounds for appropriate disposal.

Washrooms and Showers

Shower and washroom facilities are available in the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex, Thursday through Monday, 6am to Midnight. Portable toilets are available throughout the Festival grounds.

Alcohol

Alcohol and/or illegal substances may not be brought into the Festival site. Please see the camping-specific rules and regulations when purchasing a campsite.

Recommended RV Features for the Fergus Scottish Festival

August in Southern Ontario is warm and humid β€” expect daytime temperatures of 22–28Β°C with mild evenings that can still bring surprise showers. This is summer festival camping at a busy, active event site. Choose an RV that keeps you comfortable, independent, and well-prepared for three full days on the Sportsplex grounds.

  • Electrical hookup compatibility β€” serviced sites offer shore power; bring your own minimum 12/2 with ground cord and ensure your RV can run on a standard campsite hookup. Shore power keeps your air conditioning running on hot August nights.
  • Onboard air conditioning β€” August in Ontario can be warm and muggy. An RV with a working rooftop A/C unit makes a significant difference for sleeping comfortably after a full day of festival activity.
  • Onboard kitchen and full-size fridge β€” stock up before arrival. Your onboard kitchen lets you prepare breakfasts and late-night meals at your campsite rather than relying entirely on festival vendors for every meal across three days.
  • Onboard toilet and shower β€” the most important feature for an on-site festival RV. Festival portable toilets have queues during peak periods; the Sportsplex showers are available but shared with all campers. Your own private bathroom is a major comfort advantage.
  • Good storage capacity β€” kilts, clan regalia, multiple days of clothing, festival merchandise, and Scottish whisky purchases all take up considerable space. Choose an RV with generous interior storage and exterior compartments.
  • Awning and outdoor table setup β€” your campsite becomes your base camp between events. A proper outdoor setup with folding chairs, a table, and shade from your awning is where the real festival socialising happens between competitions and pub sessions.
  • Comfortable sleeping space β€” after a day of pipe band competitions, caber tossing, winemaker dinners, and Highland pub sessions, a proper bed is exactly what the evening calls for.
  • Moderate size for site access β€” most standard sites are 20′ x 40′. Oversized sites (20′ x 50′) are available for larger rigs but are located in a dedicated row. Confirm your RV length before booking.

What to Pack in Your RV for the Fergus Scottish Festival

  • Clan regalia and Scottish dress β€” kilts, tartans, sporrans, ghillie brogues, clan pins, and full Highland dress take up considerable space; an RV removes any luggage anxiety. Many attendees dress up for Saturday and Sunday β€” bring the full wardrobe.
  • A folding table and camp chairs β€” the Festival does not supply picnic tables; bring your own outdoor setup for campsite meals and between-events socialising
  • Your own electrical cord β€” minimum 12/2 with ground rating; the Festival requires this for serviced sites and will not supply one
  • Up to 100 feet of water hose β€” water hookup is limited and not guaranteed at every serviced site; a long hose maximises your chances of connection
  • Rain gear β€” August in Ontario brings occasional afternoon thunderstorms; a waterproof jacket and compact umbrella ensure outdoor Highland Games events remain enjoyable
  • Sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat β€” the Sportsplex grounds are largely open; clear August days bring strong sun for those watching Heavy Events and pipe band competitions on the field
  • Layers for evening β€” while days are warm, evenings in the Highland Pub and at the Tattoo’d in Tradition ceremony can cool down; a light jacket or sweater for after sunset is worth packing
  • Whisky glasses β€” if you’re attending the Whisky Tasting sessions, a set of proper nosing glasses in your RV lets you continue the exploration at your campsite afterward
  • Cash β€” some smaller Scottish heritage vendors and clan merchandise stalls operate cash-preferred; bring enough for the full festival circuit
  • A cooler or soft-sided bag β€” for transporting cold drinks and snacks to the competition fields and Heritage Village during the day
  • Entertainment for children β€” McKiddie’s Centre runs all weekend, but having games, books, or activities in the RV for early mornings and nap times is valuable for families

Bug spray β€” evening in Southern Ontario in August means mosquitoes; bring repellent for campsite evenings under the awning

Serviced and unserviced sites are available directly on the Sportsplex grounds, putting you within walking distance of every event across the full three days. Sites open Thursday at noon and run through Monday. Book early β€” on-site sites are extremely popular and sell out well in advance of the August festival weekend. Β

Highland Pines Campground β€” Fergus (Nearby Alternative)

Highland Pines Campground is the closest alternative campground to the Festival grounds and the only nearby facility confirmed to offer black and grey water dumping stations β€” the Festival grounds have no dump station. It is also the recommended option for:

  • RVs that exceed the on-site size restrictions (units over 28 feet looking for shaded sites, or units that simply don’t fit the standard 20′ x 40′ footprint)
  • Campers who want full hookups with guaranteed water and sewer service
  • Those who prefer to drive or cycle into the Festival rather than camp on the active Sportsplex grounds

Call Highland Pines ahead to confirm availability and closing dates for the August festival weekend.

Key Tips for Fergus Festival Camping

  • Purchase your campsite reservation and general admission tickets separately β€” both are required and on-site sites sell out months before the event
  • Measure your RV in full (with deployed slides) before selecting your site tier β€” the Festival will not admit units that exceed posted site dimensions
  • Arrive no earlier than 12 noon Thursday β€” the Festival strictly enforces this rule with no exceptions
  • No dump station is available on site; plan your grey and black tank capacity for the full festival duration, or arrange a mid-festival dump run to Highland Pines Campground
  • No generators on standard or serviced sites β€” this is a firm rule to protect the pipe band and Highland dancing competition judging

Frequently asked questions

The Festival is all ages and family-friendly throughout. Children are welcome at all general admission events, and the McKiddie’s Centre runs dedicated children’s programming all weekend. Age restrictions apply only to alcohol service at the Highland Pub and Whisky Tasting events, where Ontario’s legal drinking age of 19 applies.

Yes. These are two separate purchases. Your campsite pass grants you access to the camping area; you also need a general admission festival ticket to access the Festival grounds proper. Both are purchased through the official Festival website at fergusscottishfestival.com.

The Fergus Scottish Festival maintains a No Refunds, No Exchanges, No Exceptions policy for all ticket and campsite purchases. Purchase with this in mind and check weather forecasts close to the event.

Pets are permitted on your campsite only. They may not be brought into the Festival grounds proper. Pet owners are asked to exercise appropriate caution for the safety of their pets and other visitors.

No generators are permitted on standard or serviced sites due to the impact on competition judging β€” pipe band and Highland dancing judges must be able to hear clearly across the grounds. Generators are only permitted on Oversized sites, with restricted operating hours. If you require generator power, book an Oversized site and confirm generator hours at the time of purchase.

No. Black and grey water dumping stations are not available on the Sportsplex grounds. The closest facility with a dump station is Highland Pines Campground β€” call ahead to confirm availability. Plan your tank capacity for the full festival weekend or arrange a dump run during the event.

Most standard sites are 20′ x 40′. Shaded area sites vary and restrict units to a maximum of 28 feet. Oversized sites are 20′ x 50′, with a dedicated row for RVs over 40 feet. Measurement is from front hitch or bumper to rear bumper, not living space. Measure your fully loaded and deployed RV before selecting your site tier β€” units exceeding posted limits may not be admitted.

There is no dress code, but Scottish dress is strongly encouraged and widely celebrated. Kilts, tartans, clan sashes, and Highland dress are worn by a large proportion of attendees throughout the weekend. Many first-timers use the Festival as the occasion for their first kilt purchase β€” Scottish heritage vendors on the grounds can help.

The 2026 Featured Guest is Signal Hill, a contemporary touring musician and viral internet sensation renowned for modernizing the Great Highland bagpipe. Signal Hill performs in the Highland Pub throughout the festival weekend. An Outlander star has also been announced as a special guest for 2026 β€” check fergusscottishfestival.com for confirmed details as the event approaches.

General admission, camping, and Featured Guest tickets are on sale through the official Festival website at fergusscottishfestival.com. Popular events and on-site camping sell out well in advance β€” purchase as early as possible.
