Why Hire a Campervan for the Taupō Supercars
Taupō is a small town and accommodation fills up fast for Supercars weekend. A self-contained campervan solves the accommodation problem and puts you right at the circuit. Camping at the Oval Campground means a 350-metre walk from the track, no driving, no parking queues and no shuttles. April in Taupō is cool, so having a warm, enclosed space with your own kitchen, bathroom, bed and heating is a genuine comfort advantage over tent camping, and it’s your accommodation sorted the moment you book it, rather than competing for one of the town’s limited hotel, motel or Airbnb rooms months out. If the event runs as an NZ Double Header again, a hired campervan lets you drive between the Taupō and Christchurch rounds and see the country in between. Lake Taupō, Tongariro National Park, Huka Falls, geothermal areas and hot pools are all within easy reach, so extending the hire a few extra days turns the weekend into a proper New Zealand road trip. The Taupō District also provides free 24-hour wastewater dump stations throughout town for emptying grey and black water tanks.
The Oval Campground
The official on-site camping for the Taupō Supercars round is the Oval Campground, operated by the Taupō Horse Racing Club, sitting in the centre of the horse racing track immediately adjacent to the motorsport park.
Key details. Self-contained motorhomes and caravans only, no tents, the vehicle must have an onboard toilet, fresh water tank and grey water containment to qualify as self-contained under NZ standards. Two site sizes are typically available, historically from around NZ$295 plus booking fees, with the exact site chosen at checkout. Maximum 6 people per site, with the number of occupants selected at checkout and every person receiving a wristband at check-in. One motorhome or caravan per site, two vehicles can’t share a single site. Campground tickets don’t include Supercars entry, event tickets are purchased separately through the official Supercars event page.
Check-in and checkout. Check-in has typically opened Thursday from midday to 5pm and Friday from 10am to 6pm, with no check-in outside these windows, and checkout by Monday 10am, with all campers required to vacate by this time. A wristband is required for campground entry at all times. Sites sell out well in advance, book as soon as tickets go on sale, and review the official General Information and Conditions of Sale before purchasing, since exact times and prices are confirmed fresh each year.
Self-Contained Requirements
New Zealand has strict self-containment standards for campervans and motorhomes, and to camp at the Oval Campground (and most freedom camping spots in NZ) the vehicle must be certified self-contained. That means an onboard toilet, fixed or portable but inside the vehicle; a fresh water tank holding a minimum of 12 litres per person for 3 days; grey water containment, with sink and shower water draining to an enclosed tank rather than the ground; and a self-containment certificate, a blue warrant card or sticker displayed on the vehicle, issued by a certified inspector. When hiring, confirm the vehicle is certified self-contained before booking. Most Britz, Maui, JUCY and Star RV vehicles are self-contained as standard, but check specifically, especially with budget operators, since without a self-containment certificate you won’t be permitted into the Oval Campground.
Where to Pick Up Your Campervan for the Taupō Supercars
Auckland is the practical pickup city, about 3.5 hours north of Taupō.
| Operator | Auckland depot | Distance to Taupō |
|---|---|---|
| Britz, Apollo, Maui (shared THL depot) | 470 Oruarangi Road, Māngere | About 3.5 hours |
| JUCY, Star RV | 9 Richard Pearse Drive, Māngere | About 3.5 hours |
| Travellers Autobarn | 13 Aintree Avenue, Māngere | About 3.5 hours |
Full Auckland depot details are in our Campervan Hire Auckland guide. Confirm self-containment status specifically with your chosen operator at booking, given the Oval Campground’s strict entry requirement.
Alternative Camping Nearby
If the Oval Campground is sold out, or powered sites and full facilities matter more than proximity, there are good holiday parks in the Taupō area. Taupō DeBretts Spa Resort offers powered campervan sites with hot pool access next door, plus showers, kitchen, laundry and BBQ facilities, about 10 minutes from the circuit. Several other commercial campgrounds around town offer powered and unpowered sites with full amenities, worth booking early for Supercars weekend. Free 24-hour wastewater dump stations are available at several Taupō District Council locations around town. If camping off-site, factor in travel time and potential road closures around the motorsport park during race sessions, on-site at the Oval Campground is dramatically more convenient.
Campervan Hire Prices for the Taupō Supercars (NZD)
April sits in New Zealand’s autumn shoulder season, with prices generally lower than peak summer but still elevated around a major motorsport weekend.

These are indicative ranges. Use the search widget on this page for live pricing across operators for your specific dates. Add the Oval Campground site fee and Supercars event tickets, both confirmed directly through the official Supercars Taupō event page, on top of the campervan hire.
What to Pack for the Taupō Supercars
April in the central North Island brings cool, changeable autumn weather, so pack for cold mornings, mild days and rain: warm layers (fleece, puffer jacket, beanie, since mornings and evenings at the circuit sit around 7-10°C), rain gear (waterproof jacket and pants, since Taupō averages around 10 rain days in April), comfortable walking shoes or boots for wet grass and gravel around the circuit and campground, sunscreen and sunglasses (UV can still be moderate even with a lower autumn sun), camp chairs for setting up outside the campervan between sessions, extra blankets or sleeping bags for cold campervan nights even with heating, a torch or headlamp for navigating the campground after dark, cash for vendors and local businesses that may not take card, ear protection for the loud V8 Supercars, especially for children, and a portable phone charger, since unpowered sites mean conserving the campervan battery for essentials.
Suggested Trip Timeline
Wednesday (pickup day). Pick up the campervan from Auckland or your chosen depot and drive south. Stock groceries and supplies at a Taupō supermarket. If time allows, visit Huka Falls or soak at a local hot spring. Stay overnight at a holiday park or freedom camping spot.
Thursday (campground opens). Check in to the Oval Campground during the confirmed window. Set up the site, explore the campground and circuit precinct, and walk the 350 metres to the track to scout viewing spots.
Friday-Sunday (race days). Practice, qualifying and the main races run across the weekend. Walk from the campground to the circuit each morning, returning for lunch, a warm drink or a weather break as needed. The campground atmosphere on Saturday evening is a highlight of the weekend.
Monday (checkout and extend). Vacate the campground by 10am. With extra days on the hire, drive to Tongariro National Park, explore Lake Taupō, or head south if a Christchurch leg is part of the plan.
Following the Championship Across Both Islands
In years running as an NZ Double Header, Taupō is followed by a South Island round at Ruapuna Raceway near Christchurch. With a hired campervan, following the championship across both islands is genuinely possible.
Route option 1: Drive and ferry. After the Taupō round, drive south to Wellington (about 5 hours), then take the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry across Cook Strait to Picton, followed by the drive from Picton to Christchurch (about 4.5 hours via SH1), with time to explore the South Island en route. Allow at least 2 to 3 days for this leg. If driving the campervan onto the ferry, book early, Cook Strait ferry space for larger vehicles is limited and a Supercars weekend will spike demand, so check vehicle length limits with your chosen ferry operator before booking.
Route option 2: Fly and hire separately. Return the North Island campervan in Auckland or Hamilton after Taupō, fly to Christchurch, and hire a second campervan for the South Island round, less adventurous but saves driving time. Full route detail for the South Island leg is covered in our Campervan Hire Christchurch guide.
