Fieldays 2027: 16 to 19 June, Mystery Creek, Hamilton

Fieldays RV Hire 2027: Complete Campervan Guide for Mystery Creek

Fieldays is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest agricultural event, running for four days each June at Mystery Creek Events Centre in Hamilton, New Zealand. Renting a certified self-contained campervan or motorhome is the smartest way to attend, since local Hamilton hotels sell out months in advance and see heavy price surges during event week. An RV puts you within a 15 to 20 minute drive of the venue at a nearby self-contained park, and gives you a warm winter retreat and the freedom to continue exploring the North Island afterwards.

This guide is part of our New Zealand campervan hire hub and sits alongside other NZ event guides including Rhythm and Vines, Splore, WOMAD, Taupō Supercars and Rhythm and Alps.

Quick Answer

Fieldays 2027 runs Wednesday 16 to Saturday 19 June, 2027, with gates open 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Wednesday to Friday and 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Super Saturday. Mystery Creek Events Centre does not permit campervans or motorhomes to stay onsite overnight for Fieldays. The best RV strategy is to book a certified self-contained campervan from an Auckland depot (Britz, Maui, Apollo, Mighty, or Travellers Autobarn) and stay at one of three practical self-contained options within 15 to 20 minutes of the venue: Mystery Creek Motel (directly across from Gate 2), Hamilton Top 10 Holiday Park, or Cambridge Top 10 Holiday Park. Book 3 to 4 months ahead, since winter RV inventory in the Waikato drops fast during event week.

About Fieldays

Fieldays is the largest agricultural and agribusiness event in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting over 100,000 visitors and thousands of exhibitors each June. The event was first held in 1968 at Te Rapa Racecourse by a group of Waikato farmers and community leaders who wanted a centralised platform for agricultural innovation. Its unexpected success led to the purchase of the current Mystery Creek site, a 114-hectare property on the banks of the Waikato River.

Today Fieldays serves as a global trade event for primary industry, hosting cutting-edge agricultural technology launches, major political leaders and industry experts. Alongside the extensive commercial trade rows, the modern event features competitive arena attractions including the Fieldays Tractor Pull Championships, the Innovation Awards pavilion, the legendary Fieldays Fencing Competitions, and Excavator competitions. The Innovation Hub, Site Awards, and interactive Hauora Taiwhenua Health and Wellbeing Hub round out the experience alongside food courts and artisan markets.

Where to Camp at Fieldays With an RV

The most important thing to know about Fieldays and RV camping is that Mystery Creek Events Centre does not allow campervans or motorhomes to stay overnight during Fieldays. Per the official Fieldays FAQ: “we do not allow campervans and motorhomes to stay onsite overnight. There are lots of accommodation options nearby, in Cambridge and Hamilton CBD, with both locations just a 15-minute drive from the venue.”

If your current or previous booking suggests an on-site Fieldays Motorhome Park, please confirm directly with Fieldays before travelling; this contradicts current official policy.

The good news is that Mystery Creek is surrounded by three practical, well-regarded self-contained parks within 15 to 20 minutes of the venue. All three are booked through their own websites, not through Fieldays.

Mystery Creek Motel (directly opposite Gate 2, 125 Mystery Creek Rd, Ōhaupō): This is the closest self-contained parking option, with space for up to 30 self-contained campervans on the same road as the venue entrance. As of the last publicly listed rate, self-contained parking runs at nominal fees per night with hot water refill and dump station on-site. Walking distance to the venue gates.

Hamilton Top 10 Holiday Park (approximately 15 to 20 minutes north of the venue in Frankton): Powered sites, full communal kitchen and bathroom amenities, laundry, and heated facilities. A more comfortable option for renters preferring modern park amenities over event-adjacent parking.

Cambridge Top 10 Holiday Park (approximately 15 minutes east in the heritage town of Cambridge): Quiet powered sites nestled among trees with straightforward State Highway 1 access to the venue. Good for renters who want a base for exploring the Waikato region beyond Fieldays.

Practical camping preparation:

  • Ensure your vehicle holds valid self-containment certification: Almost all parks in the Waikato require the blue self-containment warrant sticker. All THL-group operators (Britz, Maui, Apollo, Mighty) and Travellers Autobarn NZ vehicles are self-contained certified.
  • Book your park site well in advance: Local holiday parks fill months out for Fieldays week and other major Waikato events.
  • Arrive with full fresh water and empty tanks: The nearest dump station is at the holiday parks themselves; plan a full refresh before arriving.
  • Bring heavy-duty plastic or wood wheel pads: Winter rain can make grass ground soft; quality wheel pads help prevent sinking and ensure proper leveling.

For more on how to manage tank refills between event days, see our how to dump your tanks between festival days guide.

Why Hire an RV for Fieldays

Fieldays draws over 100,000 visitors each year, and Hamilton hotels are typically fully booked for miles around by the time the event opens. Renting a self-contained campervan gives you a strategic accommodation win in a market where hotel prices spike aggressively for event week.

Beat the traffic. Fieldays organisers actively encourage attendees to use the free Park & Ride and free bus shuttles from Hamilton Transport Centre or the Regional bus network. Basing your campervan at Mystery Creek Motel or Hamilton Top 10 puts you within walking distance or a short shuttle ride of the gates, letting you skip the notorious traffic queues.

A warm winter sanctuary. June is winter in New Zealand, with average Waikato temperatures of 10 to 14°C, thick morning fog, heavy frost and consistent winter rain. A modern insulated campervan with a proper heating system is a dry, warm retreat after long days outdoors on trade rows.

Your own facilities. Enjoy the convenience of your own bathroom and shower, avoiding the queues at the venue’s public restrooms during peak hours.

Space to dry your gear. Rain and mud are near-certain during a winter event, and an RV provides the space and hanging room to dry rain jackets and boots properly.

Prepare your own hot meals. A gas stove, kettle and fridge let you cook a hearty breakfast or warm lunch, saving your budget and avoiding busy vendor queues.

Combine transport and lodging. Save money and simplify logistics by merging vehicle rental and accommodation into one bookable rental.

Split costs with a group. A 4-berth or 6-berth motorhome divides the rental and site costs across colleagues or friends, making the total cost per person competitive with hotel rooms.

Base for a winter road trip. After the event, drive from Mystery Creek straight to Rotorua’s geothermal wonders, Waitomo Glowworm Caves, or the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. See our choosing the right motorhome size for a festival crowd for group planning tips.

Recommended RV Features for a Winter Fieldays

June brings the arrival of the winter season in Waikato, with cool days, heavy overnight frost, and consistent winter rain. Choose a vehicle equipped for the conditions.

  • Efficient internal gas or diesel heating: Essential for keeping the interior warm during cold winter nights and crisp mornings.
  • Certified self-containment compliance: Mandatory for staying at any surrounding self-contained park, requiring built-in water and waste storage tanks. Look for the blue self-containment sticker.
  • An onboard hot shower and private bathroom: Provides comfort and privacy after a long day outdoors.
  • Ample internal wardrobe and hanging space: You’ll need room to hang wet rain jackets, heavy coats, and muddy boots away from your main living and sleeping areas.
  • High-capacity house batteries: Ensures your internal lighting, water pump, and heating systems operate smoothly through cold overnight hours without needing a mains hookup.
  • Quality cabin insulation and double-glazed windows: Helps trap heat inside efficiently and blocks early morning noise from adjacent vehicles.

What to Pack in Your RV for Fieldays

  • Quality waterproof gumboots or leather boots: The vast outdoor trade rows become muddy during winter rain, and proper waterproof footwear is essential.
  • A durable waterproof rain jacket: Umbrellas are impractical in crowded trade rows; a proper jacket is far better.
  • Warm winter clothing layers and thermals: Woollen sweaters, thick socks, beanies, and gloves are essential for the crisp temperatures.
  • Comfortable camp chairs and a sturdy folding table: For relaxing inside your RV or under the awning after a long day.
  • Multiple portable phone charging banks: Long days spent taking photos, scanning codes and calling colleagues will drain devices fast.
  • An insulated reusable travel mug: For keeping your morning coffee hot on the walk between vehicle and pavilions.
  • A heavy-duty outdoor plastic doormat: Positioned outside your RV step to catch mud before it reaches your vehicle interior.
  • A reusable tote bag or small backpack: For carrying brochures, product information and personal items while keeping your hands free.
  • A basic vehicle first aid kit: Include blister band-aids, pain relief, and skin moisturiser for winter conditions.
  • A small notebook and pen: For jotting down product details, trade contacts and equipment specifications.
  •

General tips for camping at Fieldays:

  • No overnight camping at Mystery Creek itself. As per Fieldays’ official policy, campervans and motorhomes cannot stay onsite overnight during Fieldays. Book a site at one of the surrounding self-contained parks (Mystery Creek Motel, Hamilton Top 10, Cambridge Top 10) as your first booking.
  • Wear serious walking boots. The Fieldays site spans over 100 hectares. You’ll easily clock 15,000+ steps in a single day. Sturdy waterproof boots are essential for the gravel tracks, hills and potential mud.
  • Use the Fieldays app to pin your vehicle location. The public parking fields are gargantuan. Download the official app and use “pin your car” to save your parking row before walking in.
  • Bring a backpack for brochures and merchandise. From heavy machinery gear to lifestyle products, you’ll collect a lot of paperwork. A comfortable backpack leaves your hands free.
  • Consider the Park & Ride option. Fieldays runs free shuttle buses from Hamilton Transport Centre. If you’re staying at Hamilton Top 10 (Frankton), the Park & Ride is potentially faster than driving to the venue during peak hours.

Suggested Trip Timeline

2 to 3 days before (pickup): Collect your certified self-contained RV from your Auckland or Hamilton depot. Spend your afternoon at a nearby supermarket stocking the fridge with fresh food, water, and winter supplies. Test your vehicle heating systems before departure. Drive south along SH1, settling into a quiet regional holiday park to shake down the vehicle.

Days 2 to 3 (Thursday-Friday): Establish a productive daily rhythm. Enjoy a hot breakfast in your warm RV before walking or shuttling to the exhibition gates as they open at 8:00 am. Spend your days exploring the trade rows, innovation pavilions, and watching arena competitions like the Tractor Pull. Return to the RV for lunch when possible.

Day 4 (Super Saturday): Catch the final championship competitions and take advantage of end-of-expo trade displays before the earlier 4:00 pm gate close. Pack up your campsite in the afternoon and follow the organized exit traffic routes.

Post-event: Take advantage of your central location by heading into the North Island’s iconic winter road trip country. Drive southeast to Rotorua for geothermal hot springs and cultural heritage sites, or west to Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Return the RV via Hamilton or drive back to Auckland via State Highway 1.
