Planning Lollapalooza 2026 by campervan or RV? Discover where to stay near Grant Park, legitimate RV camping options around Chicago, public transport tips, what to pack and the best motorhome type for your festival trip.
Lollapalooza 2026 takes over Grant Park in downtown Chicago from Thursday, 30 July to Sunday, 2 August 2026. Festival entrances open at 11:00 am and close at 10:00 pm each day.
There is no official Lollapalooza campground inside Grant Park, and you cannot drive an RV or campervan into the festival. However, renting an RV can still work well when you use it as a home base at a legitimate campground outside downtown and travel to Grant Park by public transport.
The most practical full-service option is usually Camp Bullfrog Lake, which has electric RV sites, showers and a sanitary station. McCormick Place is closer to Grant Park and permits some overnight RV parking, but it is not an RV campground, has no hookups and specifically states that leisure camping is not allowed. Anyone considering it must confirm that their intended stay is permitted before booking.

Lollapalooza is a four-day music festival held in Grant Park between Chicago’s downtown skyline and the Lake Michigan waterfront. The event features major international artists alongside emerging performers across pop, rock, electronic, hip-hop and alternative music.
The 2026 headliners are Charli XCX, Tate McRae, Lorde, Olivia Dean, John Summit, JENNIE, The Smashing Pumpkins and The xx. Other announced performers include Lil Uzi Vert, Turnstile, The Neighbourhood, YUNGBLUD, Beabadoobee, Ethel Cain, Empire of the Sun, Major Lazer and Zara Larsson.
Beyond the performances, the festival includes local food vendors, interactive brand areas, art and Kidzapalooza, a dedicated family area with workshops, crafts, theatre and children’s entertainment.
No. Lollapalooza does not provide tent, campervan or RV camping inside Grant Park.
Grant Park is a public urban park in Chicago’s central business district, not a rural festival site with camping fields. Your festival wristband does not include parking or accommodation.
The safest plan is to rent a campervan or motorhome in the Chicago region, reserve an authorised RV campsite before collecting the vehicle, leave the RV at the campsite during the festival, and travel to Grant Park using CTA, Metra, Pace or a combination of rail and rideshare.
Avoid arriving downtown in a large motorhome without reserved parking. Festival traffic, street closures, vehicle-height restrictions and limited oversized parking can make an unplanned arrival difficult. For a broader look at how on-site festival camping compares to off-site campground stays, see the guide on freedom camping vs festival campgrounds.
The right base depends on whether you prioritise proximity, campground facilities or a quieter place to recover after the festival.
| Location | Type | RV facilities | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| McCormick Place Lot B | Restricted urban RV parking | No hookups; not a campground | Travellers who receive confirmation that their intended overnight parking is permitted |
| Camp Bullfrog Lake | Public campground | Electric sites, showers and sanitary station | Most couples and groups wanting a legitimate campground |
| Illinois Beach State Park | State-park campground | Electric sites, showers and sanitary facilities | Visitors combining Lollapalooza with a Lake Michigan road trip |
| Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday | Commercial campground | Water/electric sites, Wi-Fi, pool and family facilities | Families and longer stays that do not mind a longer commute |
Always reserve the campsite separately from the RV. A motorhome booking does not include permission to park or stay overnight.
Best overall campground for a Lollapalooza RV trip
Camp Bullfrog Lake is in Willow Springs, southwest of central Chicago, within the Forest Preserves of Cook County. It provides a proper campsite rather than an urban parking space.
The campground has 26 combined RV and tent sites, electrical connections at all RV sites, a mixture of 20-amp and 30/50-amp connections, site lengths ranging from approximately 24 to 40 feet, showers and accessible indoor bathrooms, a sanitary dump station, a camp store, picnic tables and fire rings, and hiking, fishing and kayak rental nearby.
Summer RV site rates currently vary according to residency and day of the week. Check the site length and electrical connection before reserving because not every site has the same dimensions or power supply.
Advantages: Camp Bullfrog Lake provides the key facilities most festival travellers need: power for air conditioning, showers, a legal overnight site and a quiet place to sleep after Grant Park.
Limitations: It is not within walking distance of Lollapalooza. You will need to arrange a daily transport plan, such as driving a separate vehicle to an appropriate transit station or using a pre-booked rideshare. Check campground access hours carefully. Returning after the festival must comply with any gate, quiet-hour and vehicle-movement rules.
Closest option, but it is not a campground
Several competing Lollapalooza guides describe McCormick Place as a place to boondock. That description is incomplete.
McCormick Place officially lists bus and RV parking in surface Lot B. It states that overnight RV parking may be permitted subject to availability and restrictions, with no vehicle hookups. However, the same official parking information says that leisure camping is not allowed.
That means McCormick Place should not be treated like a normal campground where you can automatically extend awnings, use outdoor furniture, run camping equipment or establish a campsite.
Before relying on this option: contact the McCormick Place parking operator, explain that you are attending Lollapalooza, provide the vehicle type, height and length, ask whether occupants may remain in the vehicle overnight, request confirmation of the rules in writing, pre-book the correct oversized-vehicle space where possible, and ask about generator operation, in-and-out access and arrival times.
Do not assume that paying an overnight parking fee gives you permission to use the vehicle as accommodation.
Best for a Lake Michigan road trip
Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park is north of Chicago on the Lake Michigan shoreline. Its southern campground has 220 electric sites, with access to showers and sanitary facilities. The campground operates from April to mid-November, and reservations are strongly recommended for summer weekends.
This is a better fit for travellers who want to turn Lollapalooza into a longer Illinois road trip rather than commute to Grant Park as quickly as possible.
Best for families and campground amenities
Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday is in Union, Illinois, approximately 55 miles from downtown Chicago. The campground offers water-and-electric RV sites, 30/50-amp power, Wi-Fi, a pool, laundry facilities, a playground, mini golf and sites for vehicles up to approximately 65 feet.
The campground recommends using Metra stations in Crystal Lake or Woodstock for trips into Chicago. This option suits families, longer RVs and travellers spending several additional days in northern Illinois. It is less suitable for anyone who wants a short daily commute to Grant Park.
Class B campervan: best for two people
A Class B campervan is usually the easiest option for a couple. It is more manageable on city roads and easier to position at a transit station or campground than a large motorhome. Look for air conditioning, an onboard toilet, a small fridge, USB charging, a comfortable permanent or convertible bed, a reversing camera, and enough freshwater capacity for your group.
Compact Class C motorhome: best for three to six people
A Class C provides more sleeping space, a larger kitchen and often a separate bathroom. It can offer better value when several people share the rental and campsite costs. Before booking, compare the motorhome’s total length with the campsite dimensions. Camp Bullfrog Lake, for example, has sites of different lengths, so a vehicle that fits one site may not fit another. The guide on choosing the right motorhome size for a family of four at a festival covers the practical trade-offs between sizes.
Class A motorhome: usually unnecessary
A large Class A provides extra comfort but creates more complications around Chicago. Oversized parking is limited, city driving is more demanding, fuel use is higher and some campground sites may be too short. Choose one only when your group genuinely needs the space and you have confirmed every campsite and transport detail.
Travel trailer: consider delivery
A travel trailer may work when the rental host offers campground delivery and setup. This can remove the need to tow through unfamiliar traffic. Confirm that the campground accepts delivered trailers, the supplier will deliver to your selected site, the trailer will be collected after your stay, your campsite has the required electrical connection, and delivery and collection times comply with campground access hours.
See the full brand line-up on the Our Suppliers page, and check live availability on the Bookings page.
Public transport is generally more practical than driving an RV into downtown Chicago.
Lollapalooza officially recommends CTA, Metra and Pace and directs visitors to use the Regional Transportation Authority trip planner. CTA and Metra typically add capacity for the festival, although the final 2026 service plan should be checked closer to the event.
A good transport plan should answer four questions: Where will the RV remain during the day? Which transit station will you use? Is overnight parking permitted at that station? Can you still reach your campsite after the final performances?
Do not rely solely on rideshare after the final headline set. Demand and road closures can create long waits. Save your public-transport route offline and agree on a meeting point in case your group becomes separated.
Wednesday, 29 July: collect and set up
Collect your campervan or motorhome before the festival begins. Inspect the vehicle, buy groceries and fill the freshwater tank if required.
Drive to your reserved campground during daylight. Connect the electricity, test the air conditioning and plan the next morning’s public-transport route.
Do not leave campsite setup until Thursday morning. Festival day is not the time to discover that your power cable, levelling blocks or transport plan does not work.
Thursday, 30 July: learn the festival layout
Leave extra time for security and transport on the first day. Enter early, locate the water-refill stations, medical tents, guest services and an agreed meeting point.
Avoid trying to cross Grant Park immediately before two artists you want to see. The festival stretches across a large area, and moving between distant stages can take longer once the grounds become crowded.
Friday, 31 July: prioritise your must-see artists
Use the official schedule or app to create a realistic plan. Select a small number of essential performances and leave room for food, water and unexpected discoveries.
Return to the RV at the end of the night, recharge phones, refill water bottles and prepare clothes for the next day.
Saturday, 1 August: festival and aftershow day
Saturday is likely to be one of the busiest days. Leave the campground early and avoid bringing anything that could delay entry.
Official Lollapalooza aftershows take place at venues around Chicago. If you book one, check the route from Grant Park to the venue and then back to your campground before purchasing the ticket. A late aftershow may finish after your usual rail connection.
Sunday, 2 August: final festival day
Pack non-essential items before leaving the campsite, but do not disconnect everything if you are staying Sunday night.
Use the final day to revisit favourite food areas, see artists you missed earlier and take photographs before dark. Confirm the next day’s RV return requirements before going to sleep.
Monday, 3 August: campground checkout and RV return
Disconnect utilities, empty wastewater only at an authorised dump station and clean the campsite. Allow additional time for traffic and refuelling before returning the vehicle.
Photograph the fuel level, interior condition and exterior of the RV at handover.
Chicago’s normal July high is approximately 84°F or 29°C, while the normal low is around 66°F or 19°C. Hot, humid conditions are possible, but rain can also affect the festival. For tips on managing heat inside the van between festival days, see the guide to keeping a campervan cool at summer festivals.
Inside the festival
Bring an empty reusable water bottle or compliant hydration pack, a small portable battery pack, comfortable walking shoes, earplugs, a hat and sunglasses, non-aerosol sunscreen in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces, a lightweight poncho, government-issued identification, your activated festival wristband, emergency contact details, and any permitted medication in its correctly labelled container.
Lollapalooza currently permits small clutch bags and fanny packs measuring 6 by 9 inches or less without requiring them to be clear. Larger permitted bags must be clear and no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches. Hydration packs do not have to be clear but must meet the festival’s compartment and empty-liquid requirements.
Umbrellas, blankets, coolers, outside food, outside drinks and aerosol sunscreen are among the prohibited items. Check the current policy again immediately before attending.
At your RV
Keep bedding and towels, groceries for breakfast and late-night meals, electrolyte drinks, a first-aid kit, charging cables, levelling blocks, electrical adapters required by your campsite, freshwater hose, toilet-safe paper, rubbish bags, a printed campsite reservation, a backup transport plan, and rainproof shoes and dry clothes.
Do not take campground-only items into Grant Park without first checking the festival rules.
An RV can be economical for a group, but it is not automatically cheaper.
Calculate the complete cost: RV rental + campsite + insurance + mileage + fuel + cleaning charges + transport to Grant Park. Then compare that total with: hotel rooms + taxes + parking + meals + local transport.
A campervan often provides better value when four or more people share costs, cook some meals and continue travelling after the festival. A downtown hotel may still be better for one or two people who place the highest value on walking distance and do not want a daily commute.
Yes. Lollapalooza is an all-ages event, and Kidzapalooza provides family-oriented activities such as crafts, theatre, creative play and music workshops.
Children aged eight and under may attend without a standard ticket when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult, with a limit of two children per adult. Different conditions apply to certain premium ticket products, including Platinum and cabana packages, so families should check the rules for their exact ticket type.
For families using an RV, prioritise a campground with electrical power, air conditioning, a private bathroom, a short and simple transport route, a fixed family meeting point, hearing protection for children, and a less ambitious daily performance schedule.
Chicago is the eastern terminus of Route 66, and picking up an RV in the city opens up one of America’s most iconic road trip corridors heading south-west through Tulsa, Albuquerque and on to Los Angeles. For travellers heading south after Lollapalooza, the Indy 500 in Indianapolis is roughly three hours away on I-65 (the race runs on Memorial Day weekend, earlier in the year, but the city and speedway are worth a visit year-round). Electric Forest in Michigan runs in late June, making it a natural pre-Lollapalooza stop for travellers arriving early. Bonnaroo in Tennessee is reachable from Chicago in roughly seven hours heading south.
Later in the summer or on a separate trip, the Sturgis Rally in South Dakota (early August) is within road trip range to the north-west, and Burning Man in late August is accessible via a longer cross-country drive west. On the southwest corridor, the Albuquerque and Santa Fe RV road trip connects naturally from the Route 66 drive, and the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in October is one of the most spectacular events on the route. California-bound travellers can continue to Kings Canyon in the Sierra Nevada, Coachella and Stagecoach in the California desert, Outside Lands in San Francisco, or pick up the Nevada hot springs RV trip en route. Browse the full calendar on the Events page, or see the North America RV rental guide for depot networks across the country.
When is Lollapalooza Chicago 2026?
Lollapalooza Chicago runs from Thursday, 30 July to Sunday, 2 August 2026 at Grant Park. The festival opens at 11:00 am and closes at 10:00 pm each day.
Can you take an RV into Lollapalooza?
No. RVs and campervans cannot enter the Lollapalooza festival grounds. Leave the vehicle at a reserved campground or authorised parking facility and use public transport to reach Grant Park.
Does Lollapalooza have on-site camping?
No. Grant Park does not provide an official Lollapalooza campground. RV travellers need to reserve accommodation elsewhere in the Chicago region.
What is the best campground for Lollapalooza?
Camp Bullfrog Lake is one of the most practical legitimate campground options. It has electric RV sites, showers and a sanitary station. However, travellers still need to organise transport from the campground to Grant Park.
Can you camp overnight at McCormick Place?
Do not assume so. McCormick Place permits certain overnight RV parking subject to restrictions but says that leisure camping is not allowed. Contact the parking operator, explain your intended use and obtain confirmation before relying on it as overnight accommodation.
What type of RV is best for Lollapalooza?
A Class B campervan is suitable for a couple and easier to drive around Chicago. A compact Class C is usually better for a group requiring more beds, kitchen space and a full bathroom.
How early should I book a Lollapalooza campervan?
Book as soon as your festival ticket and campsite are confirmed. RV availability and suitable electric campsites can become limited during major summer events. Reserve the campsite before finalising a large motorhome because site lengths vary.
Can an RV be delivered to a campground?
Some peer-to-peer rental hosts and local providers offer delivery and setup. Confirm that your selected campground permits delivery, that the supplier serves the location and that the vehicle fits the reserved site.
What is the best way to travel from an RV campground to Lollapalooza?
Use CTA, Metra, Pace or a planned combination of rail and rideshare. Avoid driving a large motorhome into downtown Chicago each day.
Is Lollapalooza cashless?
Payment policies can change. Check the official festival information and activate your wristband before arrival. Carry an alternative payment method in case your preferred mobile payment option is unavailable.
A successful Lollapalooza RV trip requires two separate reservations: a suitable campervan or motorhome, and a legal place to park and stay overnight. Never assume that a parking lot permits camping or that an RV rental includes a campsite.
Event Campers compares campervans, Class B vehicles and Class C motorhomes from established rental suppliers.
